Konstantin Leontiev on the Bulgarian question in the Balkans

 

Abstract: The basic goal of this article is the analysis of the Konstantin Leontiev’s point of view about the Bulgarian question as part of the Eastern question.

The analysis of Leonitev’s historiosophy is in the context of three discourses: 

  1. geopolitical discourse (The Eastern question, the Bulgarian question, Bosphorus, Eastern Orthodox Confederation);
  2. ideological discourse (Pan-Slavism, Byzantinism, Slavism, Bosphorus Russism);
  3. metaphisical discourse (the Orthodox Christianity).

The red thread of this article is the Leontiev’s spiritual path from philosopher Konstantin to monk Kliment and the transfomation of his perspective on Bulgarian question.

The author introduces the term ‘Evropobesye’ [European devilment] as a generalization of Leontiev’s term ‘Bulgarobesye’ [Bulgarian devilment]. The Russian ‘Bulgarobesye’ is a part of Russian passion of European liberal idea – ‘Evropobesye’.
